The 161st winner of the St Leger, held on Wednesday 9th September 1936 over 1 mile 6 furlongs and 132 yards of Town Moor, was Boswell, a brown colt by Bosworth out of Flying Gal, owned by Mr William Woodward. A field of 14 runners contested the race which was worth £10,200. (Equivalent to £666,000 in 2017)

After a clean start first time Boswell made the early running from Mahmoud. After half a mile Pizzaro went on and led them into the straight, followed by Fearless Fox amd favourite Rhodes Scholar. However, the favourite began struggling fully 3 furlongs out as Boswell regained the lead.
